Because Art Prevails..with Marie Powell

Because Art Prevails..with Marie Powell
In early 2021, we received our first look at Ark Magazine’s second issue – The Reset. The issue, like the magazine itself, is brimming with beauty. Given the turn of the year (out of 2020 and into 2021) and given our societal climate, The Reset is powerfully poignant with all proceeds from the issue being donated to Black Lives Matter Canada.
In this episode of 54Lights, we sit down with the impressive founder and editor of ARK, Marie Powell. She grew up in Stratford, Ontario and studied Fashion Business at George Brown College. During our conversation, Marie stressed that fashion and art was always her preferred path and a space where she wanted to make an industry-wide difference. She quickly recognized a lack of diversity within fashion – one that kept an array of faces and perspectives from being reflected in the industry. This, in part, fueled her desire to create ARK Magazine. She began shooting her own handpicked models, with different ethnicities, alongside artwork she felt was also undervalued and underrepresented.
Marie also gave us perspective about what stage her magazine is at and the new challenges that come with it. She opened up about her experience, apprehension and struggles. As a young woman in the fashion industry, she also offered up some advice to emerging fashion majors. While loaded with important topics, this episode reveals the humorous and heartwarming side – even confessing some interesting reasons behind the name of her publication “ARK” and the reason she called issue 2, The Reset
